Submission Preparation Checklist
As part of the submission process, authors are required to check off their submission's compliance with all of the following items, and submissions may be returned to authors that do not adhere to these guidelines.
The submission has not been previously published, nor is it before another journal for consideration (or an explanation has been provided in Comments to the Editor).
The preferred file format for submissions is an MS Word document.
Where available, DOIs or other types of permanent links for the references have been provided.
The text is single-spaced; uses a 12-point font; employs bold, rather than italics. Please avoid excessive use of emphasizing.
All illustrations, figures, and tables are placed within the text at the appropriate points, and should be clearly labelled with a number and caption (with NO full stop at the end of the caption). Note that captions should be placed differently: above the tables, but below the figures.
If submitting to a peer-reviewed section of the journal, the instructions for ensuring a blind review asked to be followed:
- Remove author names and affiliations: do not include your name, institution, department, or any other identifying details in the manuscript or supplementary files.
- Authors' biodata should be included on a separate sheet: authors' names, institution, brief biographies, contact address.
- Do not include acknowledgments, funding sources, or conflict-of-interest disclosures in the version prepared for review. These can be added after acceptance in the section "Tänusõnad | Kiitokset | Acknowledgments", before the list of references.
- Avoid self-identifying references.
- Anonymize file metadata:
- With MS Office documents, author identification should also be removed from the properties for the file, by clicking on the following, beginning with File on the main menu of the Word application: File > Save As > Tools (or Options with a Mac) > Security > Remove personal information from file properties on save > Save.
- With PDFs, the authors' names should also be removed from Document Properties found under File on Adobe Acrobat's main menu.
The paper starts, after its title, with an abstract of approximately 150 words, headed "Ülevaade. | Tiivistelmä. | Abstract." (ending with a period), and a list of keywords, headed "Võtmesõnad: | Avainsanat: | Keywords:" (separated by semicolons).
All chapters and subheadings should have a section title and be numbered decimally, ending with a period (e.g., 1., 1.1., 1.1.1., etc.). No more than three levels of numbering should be used. The section numbering does not cover the Abstract and starts with the first section of the main text of the paper. References and Appendices are not numbered sections.
Notes must appear as footnotes rather than endnotes. They are identified by consecutive superscript Arabic numbering. Please avoid excessive use of notes.
Linguistic example sentences and formulas should be numbered on the left start of the line for cross reference by Arabic numbers enclosed in round brackets (e.g., (1), (2), etc.).
Linguistic example sentences from languages other than text of the paper must be accompanied by a literal word-by-word gloss as well as an translation.
For abbreviations, the authors are asked to use Leipzig Glossing Rules and List of Standard Abbreviations. Also the Childes Codes for Grammatical Morphemes are accepted.Full bibliographical references must appear under the heading "Kirjandus | Lähteet | References" at the very end of the paper, alphabetically ordered by author's surname and chronologically ordered per author.
The formatting of references is based on the Generic Style Sheet for Linguistics (downloadable PDF-file), which can also be found in reference management systems (e.g., Zotero, EndNote).
Style considerations
In-text references should follow the form (Pajusalu 2017) or, with page numbers (Lindström, Pilvik & Plado 2021: 559–660). If multiple publications are cited, the references should be separated by semicolons and listed in chronological order (Pajusalu 2017; Lindström, Pilvik & Plado 2021: 586; Tragel & Pikksaar 2023).

Appendices may be used for the presentation of detailed material supplementing the text. They appear under the separate headings "Lisa. Täpsustav pealkiri | Liite. Täsmällinen otsikko | Appendix. Clarifying title" after the main text and References.
