"What kinds of language use annoy Estonians?"

The article presents an overview of the results of an online survey conducted in February and March 2025, focusing on the question of what kinds of language use annoy L1 speakers of Estonian. The results showed that, in such a listing task, respondents most readily recalled linguistic features that have received considerable attention in school, such as vocabulary and orthography. Errors involving morphological forms (e.g., declension type alternation) were found to be the most problematic, whereas noticeable features related to pronunciation were regarded as the least bothersome. Our findings clearly highlighted the high prestige of the standard language as well as the influence of age on attitudes toward language use: the older the respondent, the more problematic they found the listed features. An interesting observation was that linguistic features linked to regional language varieties are also noticed, but are generally not perceived as bothersome or problematic – provided that the regional background of the feature is recognised.
